Professor Emeritus Derek John Mulvaney AO CMG (1925-2016). The greatly respected Australian archaeologist Derek John Mulvaney (known as John) was HAGSOC's third Patron, 1997-2007. Accepting the position in June 1997 he protested that he was not a genealogist, but that he had recently been involved in genealogical research as background to an edition of the letters of Charles Edward Cowle (1863-1922) - in charge of police at Illamurta in the Northern Territory - and that the only notable feature of his family tree was that Senator Sir Joseph Symon (after whom Symonston in the ACT is named) was Cowle's brother-in-law! The letters were published as From the Frontier: Outback Letters to Baldwin Spencer (Allen & Unwin 2000). John Mulvaney took an active interest in the Society, frequently (and unobtrusively) attending Monthly Meetings, and Society functions. After ten years in the post, Professor Mulvaney resigned in August 2007.
