Other Information: The meetings are largely informal with discussions on latest trends, available resources, problems encountered, etc. New equipment and the latest genealogy programs are regularly demonstrated.

Continental SIG

Convenor: Vacant (if you would like to help in role please contact the secretary).

SIG Purpose: The Continental European Interest Group of HAGSOC meets as a forum for discussion and exchange of information on ancestry in continental Europe.

Meeting Time: Not currently meeting as need a convenor

Meeting Place: Members may attend in person in the HAGSOC Education Room or remotely by Zoom.

Contact: For more information about this group please contact the Secretary by e-mail .

Other Information: More critically than is the case if your ancestors came from England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales, searching for your ancestors on the Continent of Europe always involves needing to establish the exact state (or province) to which your ancestor’s places of birth, marriage and death belong at the time of each event, especially given the fact that documents are held in local archives and, if formerly the capital of an independent territory, that historic territory’s state archives. Your European ancestors may well have been born in one country and died in another while both events, decades apart, took place in the same town. This situation arises in a number of continental countries. Most widely known perhaps are Polish speakers who did not have their own country between 1795 and 1918, and yet were born and died in the same town, or nearby ones. These are the sort of issues we face individually, and wrestle with together in our discussions at the bi-monthly meetings of the HAGSOC Continental Special Interest Group.

Digital Asset Management (DAM) Special Interest Group

What's on in 2021:

Next meeting: Sat 27 Mar 2021, 1000 to 1200

For 2021, the new meeting day and time will be the LAST Saturday of every odd month from 1000 to 1200, and will be split into two sessions.

Session One at 1000 is designed to help those beginning to work on managing their digital assets; and Session Two at 1100 will concentrate on topics that may appeal to the more experienced. I should state here that I’m no expert, but have some ideas and happy to facilitate your contributions.

I’m hoping this will help members at different stages in their Digital Asset Management. Naturally, you’re welcome to join either session time, or stay for both sessions.

If you’d like to know more, or be on the mailing list, please send me an email with your details, membership number, and what you’re interested in.

Meeting Place: HAGSOC Education Room, Cook Community Hub, 41 Templeton Street, Cook, ACT and Zoom.

Convenor: Danny O'Neill

What is DAM?

A possible description of digital assets and their management could be the following: Digital assets are any form of born or derivative digital file - including images, scans of analog media (paper documents, videos and photographs), documents, photos, videos, and presentations. Digital Asset Management refers to using systems and processes for the unbroken maintenance in organising, storing and retrieving digital assets, managing access rights (including in our absence or after death) and permissions (privacy and security), preserving and backing up digital assets, and ensuring continuity over time (e.g. migrating to new formats).

About the DAM name
This acronym is the name given by the author Peter Krogh for his book "The DAM Book - Digital Asset Management for Photographers" and many of his principles and ideas have been incorporated in thousands of photographer's workflows since it came out in 2005. The third edition of his book is now available, and HAGSOC members can receive a discount - ask for details at the meeting.
